Transform Your Child’s Old Bedroom into a Space of Your Own
Whether your first-born is headed to college or your youngest has flown the coop, it’s time to take advantage of that empty nest to create a space that’s all your own. But with so many options available, what’s an empty nester to do? Here are a couple of ideas for transforming your child’s old bedroom:
Design the ultimate guest retreat.
Follow just a few easy steps to create a retreat your guests will want to visit again and again:
Layer it on. Having multiple layers of bedding not only looks more elegant, it also offers your guests more flexibility when it comes to customizing for temperature.
Mix & match. Add warmth and character to your room by mixing and matching textures and patterns. To mix patterns, simply repeat the colors in each decorative pillow, while differentiating the pattern’s motif or scale.
Don’t forget the basics. All the decorative bedding in the world won’t truly make you comfortable if you don’t have the basics covered. Begin by choosing supportive pillows and, of course, a comfortable mattress and bed foundation.
Create a hobby room.
You can create a functional and comfortable hobby room—whether it’s a craft room or a place to assemble model trains—by simply:
Adding color. Choose a color that’s well suited to the room’s intended use. If you’re setting up an art studio, orange—which is said to spark creativity—is an excellent choice. Select a serene blue or mossy green for a yoga studio or writing room. You get the idea.
Choose a good workspace. Make sure you have ample space to work on your crafts or hobbies. Desks and workstations come in all shapes and sizes, making it easy to find one that perfectly suits your needs.
Tuck away the mess. Built-in storage is a great feature of many hobby rooms. If you can’t afford custom built-ins, be sure to add plenty of bookcases, cubbies, storage cubes or filing cabinets. Closet shelves also offer a good storage solution.
