New Year’s Resolutions for Your Home: #1 Declutter

The advent of the New Year is always a good time to reflect on goals and make thoughtful resolutions about how we want to improve our lives. Here are some suggestions to bring the resolutions for 2022 closer to home.

Get Rid of Old Stuff

Many people tend to acquire new things faster than they get rid of the old. This can lead to overstuffed closets and overcrowded living spaces. If you’ve noticed more things lying around your home than you have uses (or space) for, now is the perfect time to give those items a new home. If a piece is in good condition but no longer useful to you, donate it to a local charity and pass on the joy the item gave you to someone else.

If your space is being taken over by things that are no longer useful to you or anyone else, then decluttering is as simple as getting a few trash bags and dedicating time to clearing out your space. If the task seems daunting, setting a timer for 5 minutes to an hour a day for dedicated cleaning time can really ease any anxiety you are feeling.

Acquire Attractive Storage Pieces

If you’re not interested in elimination so much as organization, beautiful and functional furniture might be the perfect solution. The following are examples of pieces that look great in their own right while also helping to keep clutter at a minimum:

Seasonal Accessory Decorating

One of our favorite things about the change in seasons is the chance to make small, subtle changes that refresh our home. Accenting with throw pillows and adding in-season floral arrangements are two great ways to bring your home to life. But why not take it a step further? Decorative lanterns and boxes are perfect for creating fun, one-of-a-kind vignettes without breaking the bank. Check out some more of our favorite ideas.

FALL

Fill a decorative glass box with gourds and faux—or real—autumn leaves. Check our your local craft store and pick up a fall inspired garland to wrap around the bottom of the box.

HOLIDAY

Use lanterns decoratively by filing them with red and gold glass ball Christmas tree ornaments. Tie a wire ribbon to the lantern handle and accent with some garland.

Create a candle box using your glass box with a red candle, Christmas garland and pine cones for a festive look that you can keep all season.

SPRING

Fill your favorite lantern with faux flowers you can pick up at the craft store. We love hydrangeas and the lush look they provide to this weathered wood lantern.

Nothing says spring like bird nests and robin’s eggs. Create a springy moment on a shelf by filling a decorative glass box with faux leaves, flowers, a nest and some faux eggs.

A Naturally Beautiful Thanksgiving Tablescape

With so much emphasis on food during Thanksgiving, we thought we’d focus less on stuffing and more on style—at least until dinner is served! Because if you’re going to spend all that time preparing a delectable meal, your Thanksgiving table decor should look just as beautiful.

Fortunately, there are lots of ways to create a beautiful Thanksgiving tablescape, from seasonal and colorful to whimsical and personal. Just make sure your imagination leaves enough room for family and friends to sit and enjoy their meal.

This year, we’re opting for a natural approach, using real branches and acorns to complement metallic sculptural pumpkins, gourds and other fall fruits. Watch our table being set, and good luck creating your own Thanksgiving tablescape. Let’s eat!

Taming Clutter: Desk Edition

It’s not hard to fall behind on organization in the workplace or at your home desk. When you do, you might find yourself buried in a mess of clutter. The coffee mugs, notebooks, papers, pens, and everything else inevitably pile up and make your life a little harder. Finding necessary items is a task on its own, and every task on your to-do list is bound to take much longer than it should. If clutter is holding you back, make your life easier and take action!

Decluttering is as easy as following three steps.

Sort, Stow, and Select.

First, sort through your clutter. Take a good look at your desk and start putting similar items together. Stack up print-outs and memos, with the most important on top for easy access. Pile those pens up. Put your water bottle, coffee mug, and that box of granola bars into a group. Once it’s all sorted, it’s time for the next step!

Now, stow it away. Do you really need your wallet and keys at arm’s reach throughout the day? Non-essential work items like these can easily be stored in a desk drawer or in your bag without causing an inconvenience. That stack of papers should be tucked away in a file cabinet, and that pile of pens can go in a pen cup. Once you’ve moved all of your items to their proper locations, you’ll find that the essentials are all that’s left! This may sound minor, but without these distractions in the way, it will be much easier to focus on the task at hand.

Finally, select the items you need for a specific task, and make sure they go back to the right spot once you’re done. If the only items in front of you are the ones you need at the time, there should be no problem staying on track. Rather than having a desk full of reminders of other tasks you need to complete, you’ll have just the essentials and plenty of room to get your current task done. Repeating the process and getting everything back to its proper place will ensure your workstation stays free of clutter, and your day stays free of distractions!

Try It Out!

Now, this all seems obvious, but you may be surprised at how beneficial these steps are. No more knocking things over, shuffling through random papers, or getting distracted by your phone. Once your items are sorted and stowed, all you’ll have left is the ideal workspace. Give it a try! It should only take a few minutes, but it will save you hours in time you would have spent rummaging through clutter.

Once your desk is sorted out, apply these steps to your room and let us see how it looks! We’d love to see how decluttering has brightened up your environment. Snap a quick Instagram photo and remember to tag #MyAshleyHome.
